This metal sign explains each area of the new diesel. A Boeing B17F Flying Fortress bomber was christened "Spirit of the Union Pacific" in August 1943.  She was funded by war bond contributions from Union Pacific employees and was the first heavy bomber to be named after a railroad.  She flew as part of the 571st Bomber Squadron.  She was shot down on her 5th mission while bombing military installations at Munster, Germany.  Click on image for zoom.
